Science fiction writer whose work explored race, poverty, religion and politics. Considered one of the first eminent black science fiction writers. Recipient of the first McArthur Fellowship (Genius Grant) for a science fiction writer. Notably books include 'Kindred' (1979) and 'Fledgling' (2006). Recipient of numerous writing awards. Also known as Octavia E. Butler.
