WORLD'S FIRST TRANSEXUALS
This week we profile the first male-to-female and female-to-male individuals to undergo successful sex reassignment surgery. Both individuals hail from the U.K. and their successful transitions occurred in the mid-1900s. Each wrote an autobiography on their experiences.
Roberta Cowell was the first m-to-f transsexual who identifies as intersexed. Before her surgery, ran a successful motor-racing team in Europe. Her autobiography is titled 'Roberto Cowell's Story'.
Laurence Michael Dillon was the first f-to-m transsexual who, after surgery, went on to a successful career as a physician. Wrote a book on his experience that first used the term 'transexuality'
Since then, many others have had successful and high-profile transitions, notably activist Chaz Bono, the world's first 'pregnant man' Thomas Beatie, model Carmen Carrera, and many more.
