Description

Writer of biographies, short stories, and plays. Notable for her book 'Gluck, 1895-1978' (1988, on the life of Hannah Gluckstein) and 'Gertrude and Alice' (1991, on Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas) and other biographies that explore LGBTQ individuals. Winner of the Whitbread Award (2001) for 'Selkirk's Island', the story of the Scottish sailor Alexander Selkirk (on which Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe was based).
