Notable economist and Professor of History (1883-1900). Founder of Wellesley College Economics department serving as its Dean. Author of numerous books, including 'The Growth of the English Nation' (1894), 'Industrial History of the United States' (1905, 1911), and 'Economic Beginnings of the Far West' (1912). Partner of Katharine Lee Bates.
