Description

Renaissance and Elizabethan poet. Notable works include the sonnet 'Astrophel and Stella' (1582) and prose 'Arcadia' (1580). Knighted in 1583. Member of Parliament for Kent in 1581 and 1584–85. Widely admired as the Elizabethan ideal of a gentleman. Had a romantic affair with French diplomat Hubert Languet as noted in published correspondence.
