Smollett suffered a life-threatening attack in January 2019 when two men approached him outside a Chicago bar. The men allegedly yelled homophobic and racist slurs at him, throwing a noose around his neck as they beat and punched him. The incident received the widespread media attention that, for the most part, addressed the realities of discrimination against LGBTQ and black citizens in the United States.
