Description

Neurologist and author of medical books on the subject. Professor of Neurology at NYU (1992-2007) and Columbia University (2007-2012). Notable books include 'Awakenings' (1973). Author of his autobiography, 'The River of Consciousness' (2017) and 'On the Move: A Life' (2015) in which he disclosed his homosexuality. Contributor to The New Yorker and The New York Review of Books. Posthumous collected essays were published as 'Everything In Its Place' (2019). Appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (2008). Member of the boards of the The Neurosciences Institute and the New York Botanical Garden. Had a relationship with writer Bill Hayes.
