Description

Neurologist and author of medical books on the subject. Professor of Neurology at NYU (1992-2007) and Columbia University (2007-2012). Notable books include 'Awakenings' (1973). Author of his autobiography 'On the Move: A Life' (2015) in which he disclosed his homosexuality. Contributor to The New Yorker and The New York Review of Books. Posthumous collected essays were published as 'The River of Consciousness' (2017) and 'Everything In Its Place' (2019). Appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (2008). Member of the boards of the The Neurosciences Institute and the New York Botanical Garden. Had a relationship with writer Bill Hayes.
