Description
Literary critic, biographer, poet, and man of letters. Confided his attraction to men in letters to his contemporaries. His account of his childhood in the book 'Father and Son' (1907) has been described as the first psychological biography. Lectured in English literature at Cambridge University. Art critic with a specialty in sculpture. Librarian of the House of Lords Library (1904). His poetry collections include 'The Autumn Garden' (1908) and 'On Viol and Flute' (1873). Named a Companion of the Order of the Bath (1912) and was knighted (1925).
