Description
Musical - theatre composer who is considered to have changed the face of modern musical theatre. Wrote music and lyrics for over 21 works. Recipient of a Pulitzer Prize for Drama ('Sunday in the Park With George', 1985) and eleven Tony Awards, five of them for best musical and six won for best original score. Notable works include 'Sweeney Todd' (1984), 'West Side Story' (lyrics), 'A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum' (1962), 'Sunday in the Park With George' (1984), and 'Gypsy' (1959). Recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom (2015). In 2008, he was given a Tony Award for lifetime achievement, and in 2010 a Broadway house on West 43rd Street, Henry Miller’s Theater, was renamed in his honor. His song 'Send In the Clowns' won the Grammy for song of the year in 1975. In films, his song 'Sooner or Later (I Always Get My Man)' for Warren Beatty’s 'Dick Tracy' won an Academy Award in 1991. Author of his memoirs 'Finishing the Hat' (2010) and 'Look, I Finished the Hat' (2011).
