Auto and Transportation Experts Who Identify as LGBTQ
Transportation and automobile sectors are a global industry that is one of the largest economic sectors. Statista reports that the global automotive manufacturing market alone was worth about 2.86 trillion U.S. dollars in 2021 and is projected to grow to some 2.95 trillion U.S. dollars in 2022. It is an intensive technology user that leads innovation, directly employs 13.58 million people (2020), and supports many indirect jobs through suppliers and other affiliates.
According to Community Marketing Insights, most LGBTQ and general population studies tend to range from 82% to 88% for car ownership in 2020 (CMI research in the past three years puts the range from 82 percent to 85 percent for LGBTQ). Their brand preference, in order of favourite, is Toyota, Honda, Ford, Subaru, Chevrolet, Nissan, Jeep, Hyundai, Volkswagen, and Kia. Some 43 percent of LGBTQ individuals would have an interest in purchasing an electric vehicle.
Many automotive suppliers have diversity initiatives to encourage LGBTQ and other minority communities to participate. Sadly, though, car ads are still dominated by heterosexual couples with the man in a dominant position. Many repair shops retain attitudes which make them even hostile to women and LGBT people. The CMI survey reports about half of LGBTQ participants (48%) were able to think of an auto brand that they consider to be LGBTQ-friendly but only Subaru registered significant brand recognition among the LGBTQ community.
