Theatre and Film actor, notably in the stage productions of 'Peter Pan' (Tony Award and Emmy Award, 1954), 'South Pacific' (Tony Award, 1949-1951), and 'The Sound of Music' (Tony Award, 1959). Inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame (1973), and received the Kennedy Centre Honor (1989). Bisexual - had a notable affair with silent screen actor Janet Gaynor, among others.
