Founding faculty members of the then César Chávez Center for Interdisciplinary Instruction in Chicana and Chicano Studies at University of California, Los Angeles since 1994. Writer of fiction and interpreter of real events. Notable books include 'Desert Blood: The Juarez Murders' (2005 - Lambda Literary Award). Recipient of numerous awards, including the International Latino Book Award (2009, 2005) and Latino Literary Hall of Fame for Best Historical Fiction (2000). Writes the blog 'Cooking with Sor Juana'.
