Description

Appointed Britain's poet laureate in May 2009. She is the first woman, the first Scot, and the first openly LGBTQ person to hold the position in the 400 year history of the position. Won the National Poetry Competition in 1983, and winner of the T.S. Elliot Prize for 'Rapture' (2005). Other notable award-winning collections of poetry include 'Selling Manhattan' (1987), 'The Other Country (1990), and 'Mean Time' (1993). Appointed as a Dame of the Order of the British Empire (2014). Winner of many other awards and accolades.
