Description

Gardener, nursery owner and author, notable for his introduction of colourful border gardens at his home and public showcase, Great Dixter, that included and experimented with more exotic, non-native plants compared to the traditional English style of garden. Author of the books 'The Mixed Border' (1957) and 'The Well Tempered Garden' (1970), amongst others, and contributed columns and opinions to numerous magazines and newspapers. Received the Victoria Medal of Honour from the Royal Horticultural Society (1979) and the Order of the British Empire (2000). His home and garden is now the Great Dixter Charitable Trust.
