Conceived of the idea of the Names Project Memorial Quilt, in memory of each individual who has died of Aids. Co-founder of San Francisco Aids Foundation. Author of his autobiographies 'Stitching a Revolution' (2000) and 'When We Rise: My Life in the Movement' (2016, Lambda Literary Award).
