Description

Advocate of human rights. Justice of the Constitutional Court of South Africa from 2009-2019. Judge of the High Court, 1994-2000. Instrumental in including sexual orientation in the Bill of Rights, and drafting a Charter of Rights on HIV/Aids. Drafted the Charter of Rights on AIDS and HIV, co-founded the AIDS Consortium (a national affiliation of non-governmental organizations working in AIDS), which he chaired for its first three years, and founded and was the first director of the AIDS Law Project. Chancellor of Stellenbosch University. Publicly announced he is living with AIDS.
