Poet Laureate of the United States from 1949 to 1950, Pulitzer Prize winner (1956) for her collection of poetry 'Poems: North & South—A Cold Spring', and National Book Award winner (1970) for her collection 'The Complete Poems'. Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress. Relationship with Alice Methfessel and architect Lota de Macedo Soares. Subject of the book 'Paris, 7 A.M.' (2019) and 'Love Unknown. The Life and Worlds of Elizabeth Bishop' (2019).
