Description

Novelist and short story writer. Court-martialled for his relationship with men while on duty in the military in Ceylon. During his prison term he kept an extensive diary that would later be used as material for his novels. Had a breakdown when he was released from prison, from which he retired to work on his novels and short stories. Works reflect difficulties of life for men in terms of age, class and race as they search for homosexual love. Notable for the book 'In the Making' (1952) which follows the story of a young boy as he ages from six to fourteen and his passionate obsession with an older boy.
