Description

Actor and theatre director, known for his dramatic productions and opera productions. Notable for his co-acting roles in the theatre with John Gielgud. Director of the Old Vic Theatre School (1947-1951) and the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon (1952-1959). Director of productions at Sadler's Wells Opera (1959-onwards). Appointed a Commander of the British Empire (1954). Had a relationship with poet Siegfried Sassoon, for which a long lost poem was found in 2019. Bisexual.
