Tennis player. Winner of ten Grand Slam titles in the late 1920s and '30s. World Number 1 in 1936. Author of several books, including 'Modern Tennis' (1933) and 'Improve Your Tennis' (1935). First woman to wear shorts at Wimbledon. Member, International Tennis Hall of Fame, 1962. Life-long partner was Virginia Gurnee.
