Smollett suffered a life-threatening attack in January 2019. Two men approached him outside a Chicago bar, allegedly yelled homophobic and racist slurs at him, beat and punched him and threw a noose around his neck. The incident received the widespread media attention that for many addressed the realities of discrimination against LGBTQ and black citizens in the United States.
