Notable as the author of 'A Raisin in the Sun' (1959). First black person to write a play which performed on Broadway. Staff member of the newspaper 'Freedom'. Activist for gay rights and feminism. Subject of the book 'Looking for Lorraine: The Radical and Radiant Life of Lorraine Hansberry' by Imani Perry (2018, Lambda Literary Award).
