Description

Playwright and poet, and co-founder of the Nuyorican Poets Café, despite a background infused with criminal and gang participation (which often was the subject of his work). Notable works include 'Sideshow' (1974) and 'Short Eyes' (1974). Other awards include a Drama Desk Award, Outstanding New Playwright (1974), New York Drama Critics' Circle Award, Best American Play (1974), and an Obie Award, Best American Play (1974). Partner was painter Martin Wong.
