Author of children and teen books, notably 'Annie on My Mind' (1982), a lesbian novel that was highly praised but also banned by many libraries and subject to a federal censorship case. American Library Association awarded her the Margaret A. Edwards Award for lifetime achievement in writing books for teens. Former editor with the firm Houghton Mifflin.
