Description

Mathematician, noted for his contributions to set theory and topology. The Alexandroff compactification and the Alexandrov topology are named after him. President of the Moscow Mathematical Society (1932-64), vice president of the International Congress of Mathematicians (1958-62), and Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences (1953). Partner was fellow academic Andrey Kolmogorov. Also known as Pavel Sergeevich Aleksandrov, Pavel Sergeyevich Aleksándrov, and Alexandroff.
