Description

Poet, literary critic, essayist, teacher, and translator. Recipient of the Pulitzer prize for 'Untitled Subjects (1970), the Academy of Arts and Letters Literary Award and a MacArthur Fellowship. Named a Chevalier of L'Ordre National du Mérite by the government of France. Poet Laureate of the State of New York from 1993 to 1995. Credited with introducing modern French fiction to the United States through his translations. Held several academic positions in various universities.
