Description

Queensland's first Colonial Secretary and Premier (1859-1866). Notable for his education and land legislation policies. Returned to England and became Permanent Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies (1871-1893) and Chairman of the Tarrif Commission (1896). Recipient of the Order of St. Michael and St. George (1903). Lived with John Bramston.
