Film and theatre actor. Notable films include 'Great Expectations' (1946), 'The Bridge on the River Kwai' (Academy Award - 1957), 'Doctor Zhivago' (1965), and 'A Passage to India' 91984). Theatre presence includes many Shakespeare productions. Received a Tony Award for Best Actor in the play 'Dylan' (1960). Received the Academy Honorary Award for lifetime achievement in 1980. Received a Commander, Order of the British Empire in 1955, and Companion of Honour in 1984. Bisexual.
