Description

British poet, literary editor, and critic. During the course of his life he morphed from homosexual (fell in love with Tony Hyndman in 1933, the two living as a same-sex couple 1935–36) to bisexual (married Inez Maria Pearn 1936-1939) to homophobic straight man (married to Jewess Natasha from 1941 until his death). Noted for his work 'Twenty Poems' (1930). Co-founded Horizon magazine and served as its editor from 1939 to 1941. He was editor of Encounter magazine from 1953 to 1966. The first non-American citizen to serve as Poet in Residence at the Library of Congress. Professor of English at University College, London, from 1970 to 1977. In 1985 won The Golden Pen award.
