Description

Diplomat and ambassador, having been posted to Malta, Aden, Iraq, Barbados, Libya and Israel. Colonial Secretary to Barbados (1947); political adviser in Cyrenaica (1950-51). Became an expert in Mediterranean antiquities, a subject on which he wrote many books. Appointed OBE (1944), Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. Though married, he later divorced and confirmed his homosexuality.
