There is an increasing number of high-profile transgender athletes around the world in many sports. This has come about through the efforts of the athletes themselves to be considered legitimate competitors and by activism by the LGBTQ community in changing sports regulations to accommodate transgender athletes.

+

Two prominent topics within the LGBTQ community today are those of ageing and housing. While both issues have their distinct characteristics and challenges, they also overlap and share several common issues. These include concerns such as discrimination, homelessness, and health.

The opposition to including transgender athletes is often based on arguments regarding the different testosterone levels in males and females. There has been particular concern that transgender women would continue to have male physical attributes that would give them an advantage in competing with cisgender athletes. Discussion and controversy on the issue begins at the high school up to the professional athlete level, and includes the participation of coaches, referees, parents, governing bodies, doctors, and more.

+

There has been significant research published on both issues in the past few years and this has raised their profile around the world. This research has encouraged local activists to step up their work to address the concerns. This focus mirrors changes in society itself, where the population is ageing and housing is becoming less affordable for the average individual.

Sports authorities continue to work with the issue of including transgender athletes and have been modifying their rules of participation. The International Olympic Committee allowed transgender athletes to participate beginning in 2004, subject to meeting some specific criteria. For example, to compete, a trans woman athlete is required only to declare her gender as 'female' and have testosterone levels comparable to or below those of cisgender women. Other athletic organizations have, or are in the process of, following this type of regulation. There continues to be extensive research required over the long term to scientifically determine if transgender athletes have any particular competitive advantage in their sport.

+

Many LGBTQ individuals within the community play an active role in both housing and ageing issues. Some are politicians and government ministers whose remit includes these areas. Others are with activist organizations such as: SAGE and Aging With Pride in the United States; Egale in Canada; or Stonewall Housing, the Albert Kennedy Trust, and HouseProud in Great Britain. Several high profile celebrities have made these issues their point of focus, including television actor [[Robert Gant]] and interior designer [[Todd Oldham]].

A recent scientific study concluded that as testosterone levels approach female norms, trans women experience a decrease in muscle mass, bone density and other physical characteristics (see reference below). This is an argument that trans women can compete on an equal level as cisgender women because anatomy does not matter.

Lgbthousing.jpg

Two prominent topics within the LGBTQ community today are those of ageing and housing. While both issues have their distinct characteristics and challenges, they also overlap and share several common issues. These include concerns such as discrimination, homelessness, and health.

There has been significant research published on both issues in the past few years and this has raised their profile around the world. This research has encouraged local activists to step up their work to address the concerns. This focus mirrors changes in society itself, where the population is ageing and housing is becoming less affordable for the average individual.

Several high profile celebrities have made these issues their point of focus, including television actor Robert Gant and interior designer Todd Oldham.

We have found LGBTQ individuals active on LGBTQ housing and ageing issues in Australia, Canada, Chile, France, Great Britain, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, and the United States. To read more and see the complete list CLICK HERE
