Film director, notably of the films 'The Winslow Boy' (1948), 'The Way to the Stars' (1945), and 'The Importance of Being Earnest' (1952). First British director to join a trade union and fight for better working conditions for employees as president of industry body the Association of Cinematograph and Television Technicians (ACTT).
