Description

Former Independent and Labour Member of Parliament, Minister of Education (2007-2008), Minister of Ethnic Affairs (2002-2008), Minister of Housing (2005-2007), Minister of Local Government (2002-2005), and Minister for Building Issues (2004-2005). The first openly-gay individual appointed to a Cabinet position. First elected in 1993. Currently member of United Nations in Afghanistan as director of the Governance Unit of the United Nations mission (2011-2015), and Senior UN Advisor for Rakhine State in Myanmar since 2015. Co-founder of New Zealand Rainbow Labour. Activist for LGBT rights.
