African-American jazz and blues singer, one of the most influential of her time. Noted for her rendition of 'Stormy Weather'. Made a transition to dramatic stage roles. One of America's highest paid entertainers of her time. First African woman to be nominated for an Emmy Award (1962). Had a lesbian relationship with dancer Ethel Williams.
