Description

Actor, singer and writer. Appeared in the children's television show 'Mister Roger's Neighborhood' (starring Fred Rogers) as Officer Clemmons. Performed with the Metropolitan Opera Studio (1968-1975). In 1976 he won a Grammy Award (Best Opera Recording) for a recording of Porgy and Bess. Artist in Residence and director of the Martin Luther King Spiritual Choir at Middlebury College (1997-2013). Founder of The Harlem Spiritual Ensemble. Author of his autobiography 'Officer Clemmons: A Memoir' (2020), and the stage musical 'My Name is Hayes'. Received an honorary Doctor of Arts degree from Middlebury College.
