Description

Poet and novelist. Named the Makar (national poet laureate) of Scotland (2016). Chancellor of the University of Salford (2014). Member of the Order of the British Empire, and Commander of the Order of the British Empire (2020). Professor of Creative Writing at Newcastle University. Author of memoir 'Red Dust Road' (2010). Poetry collection 'Fiere' was shortlisted for the 2011 Costa Prize for poetry and short story collection 'Reality Reality' was published 2012. Her first book of poetry, the partially autobiographical 'The Adoption Papers', was published in 1991 and won the Saltire Society Scottish First Book Award. Other awards include the 1994 Somerset Maugham Award for 'Other Lovers', and the Guardian First Book Award Fiction Prize for 'Trumpet', based on the life of American jazz musician Billy Tipton.
