Description

Author of children's books and considered one of the most popular authors in the country. She has written over 100 books, including the Tracy Beaker series. Themes in her books include adoption, divorce and mental illness. Many of her books have been adapted for television. She has received nmerous awards, including The Young Telegraph/Fully Booked Award in 1995 for 'The Bed and Breakfast Star', the Smarties Prize, the Sheffield Children's Book Award and the Children's Book Award for 'Double Act'. 'The Illustrated Mum' was on the shortlist for the 1999 Whitbread Children's Book Award and has won the 1999 Children's Book of the Year at the British Book Awards and the Guardian Children's Fiction Award. Chancellor, University of Roehampton since 2017. Appointed Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (2008).
