Historian and travel writer. Notable for the Pax Britannica trilogy (1968–78), a history of the British Empire. Transgender, and formerly James Morris. Awarded the Commander of the British Empire (1999). Awarded the Golden PEN Award by English PEN for "a Lifetime's Distinguished Service to Literature". Welsh nationalist.
