Notable theatre credits include 'Lost in Yonkers' (Tony Award). Former artistic director of the Old Vic theatre in London, England (2004-2015). Also known for his singing. Member, Board of Directors of the Motion Picture and Television Fund. Appointed an honorary Commander and Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2010 and 2015. Came out as gay in 2017 after being accused of making improper sexual advances to another male actor.
