Description

Painter and landscape artist, identified as a male at time of birth and named Einar Mogens Wegener. Had sex reassignment surgery in the 1930s, probably the first ever in recorded history, as noted in the book 'Man into Woman' and 'The Danish Girl' (being made into a film). During her transition, she was married to fellow painter Gerda Wegener and received his wife's full support for the transition. During her third surgery, it was discovered that she was Intersex.
