Elected Sheriff, Dallas County, Texas since 2004. Former Captain in the U.S. Army, and Senior Agent in the Department of Homeland Security (2002-2004). Appointed by President Barack Obama to a committee studying immigration reform. Has often spoken publicly about the challenges facing a law enforcement officer and being LGBTQ.
