Professor of History at San Francisco State University. Historian of U.S. law, politics, and society, with research and teaching interests in constitutional law, social movements, gender, race and sexuality. Books include 'The Stonewall Riots: A Documentary History' (2019), 'Rethinking the Gay and Lesbian Movement' (2012), and 'City of Sisterly and Brotherly Loves: Lesbian and Gay Philadelphia, 1945-72' (2000, 2004). Editor-in-Chief, Encyclopedia of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender History in America (3 volumes) (2003).
