Civil rights activist and lawyer with the Worker's Defense League. Served on the 1961 Presidential Commission on the Status of Women and in 1966 was a co-founder of the National Organization for Women. First black Deputy Attorney General of the State of California (1946). First black woman ordained an Episcopal priest (1977). . Author of numerous legal books and commentary.
