It is beneficial to have LGBTQ participation in today's educational institutions.  One way to achieve this is to have representation from the community in the pool of Academic Deans.  Public and many private educational institutions mandate that diversity, equity, and inclusion policies be adopted which are non-discriminatory on issues including sexual identity. Having such policies include the LGBTQ community makes staff and students who identify as LGBTQ feel welcome and embraced within the institution.

The role of an Academic Dean is to administer a department or faculty (being a collection of departments) within an educational institution, develop strategies for the education of students in the department, work with other education administrators to promote the institution, and hire the skilled faculty to conduct research and lead classes. They represent the faculty or department's policies and point of view to others. Examples can include the Dean of Graduate Studies, Dean of Engineering, Dean of Students, and many others. Academic Deans are the most senior administrative position for the faculty or department.

We present a number of LGBTQ individuals that hold, or have held, prominent Academic Dean positions. Most of these are located in the United States. They reflect the diversity of the LGBTQ community itself.
