Justice of the Peace, High Sheriff of Norfolk (1951), and the former squire of National Trust property Felbrigg Hall, responsible for restoring his ancestral home and bequeathing it to the nation in the early 20th century. County historian. Biographer of Thomas Gray and Horace William, 4th Earl of Orford Walpole amongst many others, and discussed their same-sex desires in an open and honest way.
