Description

Renowned writer and explorer of Africa and the Middle East, noted for his endurance tests that encompassed his travels and using such travels to escape the confines of western civilization as he perceived them. Enjoyed the companionship of the men he portrayed in his writings. Awarded the founder's medal of the Royal Geographical Society. Author of several books and noted photographer on his explorations. Awarded the Commander of the Order of the British Empire (1968).
