Soap operas are long-running television shows that portray the lives of many individuals through their daily, usually emotionally intense, interactionsThey usually are shown during the daytime, though there are some notable evening soap operas. This genre of television show got its name from the sponsorship of soap companies in its early days. They are known as telenovas in Spanish-speaking countries. Soap operas attract millions of dedicated viewers.

LGBTQ individuals who are also political activists have formed official groups within their political parties to advocate for the interests of their specific communityOne such organization in the United Kingdom was the group LGBTory.

There have been many prominent actors in soap operas that are LGBTQ. Producers and directors of these shows who are LGBTQ include the creators of Britain's most popular soap opera 'Coronation Street', [[Derek Granger]] and [[Tony Warren]]; the producer of 'Hollyoaks' and 'EastEnders' [[Bryan Kirkwood]]; and soap opera scriptwriter [[Jonathan Harvey]].

The LGBTQ political organization of Britain's Conservative Party has gone through several name changes. Originating as the Conservative Group for Homosexual Equality, it subsequently became LGBTory and in 2016 renamed the LGBT+ Conservatives. It has had an impact both within the political party and outside of it in advancing the interests of the LGBTQ community while adopting the official stance put forth by the party itself. More recently, it has spawned offshoots in Canada (2015) and Scotland.

In terms of the content of soap operas, it is only relatively recently that the story lines have included LGBTQ characters. The American soap opera 'Soap' was the first to include a gay character in 1977 (the character Jodie Dallas), while the first openly gay character in Great Britain's soaps was the show 'Brookside' in 1982 (the character Gordon Collins).

Transgender characters have only recently been prominent in soap operasThough Britain's 'Coronation Street' introduced the first transgender character, Hayley Cropper, in 1998, most recent additions have included [[Ash Palmisciano]] in Emmerdale, and [[Annie Wallace]] in Hollyoaks.</p?

There is often a perceived irony that a political party that takes an official stance against many interests of the LGBTQ community can also have active LGBTQ membership. This is certainly the case for the Log Cabin Republicans in the United States, and has often been a bemused observation with respect to LGBTory. The answer may lie in the opinions about the functioning of society, and the respect accorded to individuals within that societyThere is often a conflict about being LGBTQ and being public about it, as represented by the process of 'coming out of the closet', and this dissonance is reflected within these political interest groups. At the same time, politics often rewards those who stand out from the crowd, and this works both within and without the various political entities involved. Perhaps the irony lies in the process of stereotyping, and diversity is really more prominent within political organizations than realized.</p

Despite adversity and discrimination, LGBTQ individuals have excelled throughout history. Yet historians and academics have conveniently participated in the heterosexist erasure of these LGBTQ contributions by omitting the LGBTQ status of prominent historical figures from academic and historical documents. Accordingly, there are relatively few comprehensive projects which document and showcase the influence of these LGBTQ efforts.

DID YOU KNOW?

Members of the Political Group LGBTory

Lgbtory.jpg

LGBTQ individuals who are also political activists have formed official groups within their political parties to advocate for the interests of their specific community. One such organization in the United Kingdom was the group LGBTory.

These Conservative Party organizations have a prominent appearance in many global Pride Parades. As well, they often publish position papers on legislation and other matters which impact the LGBTQ community.

There is often a perceived irony that a political party that takes an official stance against many interests of the LGBTQ community can also have active LGBTQ membership. This is certainly the case for the Log Cabin Republicans in the United States, and has often been a bemused observation with respect to LGBTory. The answer may lie in the opinions about the functioning of society, and the respect accorded to individuals within that society. There is often a conflict about being LGBTQ and being public about it, as represented by the process of 'coming out of the closet', and this dissonance is reflected within these political interest groups. At the same time, politics often rewards those who stand out from the crowd, and this works both within and without the various political entities involved. Perhaps the irony lies in the process of stereotyping, and diversity is really more prominent within political organizations than realized.

We have identified the following prominent LGBTQ individuals as having a role in LGBTory. To read more and see the complete list, click HERE
