Canada’s first public protest for gay rights, We Demand, occurred in 1971, and the left-leaning Front homosexuel d'action révolutionnaire was formed in France (subsequently morphing into the CUAHR).  The Campaign For Homosexual Law Reform began in Ireland and Northern Ireland around the same time.</p>

LGBTQ Academics in Sexuality Studies

Queertheory.png

Sexuality Studies is composed of academic research programs into the role sexuality plays in the economic, cultural, artistic, political, technology, social and literary worlds. In this context, sexuality broadly includes aspects of race, gender, age, nationality, disability, religion, and more. It brings theory and observation related to sexuality into the conversation with research in the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences. Sexuality research encompasses both sex and sexual health.

The goal of Sexuality Studies is to provide context in how sexuality impacts work, creativity, and social conditions in both the national and international world. Its purpose is to question assumptions on this impact and provide more pragmatic insight based on extensive academic research.

The intersection of these aspects of sexuality with the inter-disciplinary professional world is the subject of courses, research and theses. Much of this work looks at the social relations of power in a variety of cultural and historical contexts, practices, and texts. Many of the Sexuality Studies programs are affiliated with centres that include feminist, queer and gender studies.

It is natural that LGBTQ academics are prominent in the field of Sexuality Studies. As LGBTQ issues have risen in prominence in society, gender and sexuality have become central to the analysis rather than peripheral, and much of this increased focus has been due to the extensive research and commentary produced by these academics.

The Sexuality Studies Association (SSA) is a multi- and interdisciplinary association for scholars, artists, activists and other community members, who have an interest in the teaching and study of sex, sexuality and gender diversity.

We have identified prominent LGBTQ academics in Sexuality Studies from Australia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, France, Germany, Great Britain, Indonesia, Peru, Portugal, South Africa, Spain, Taiwan, The Netherlands, and The United States. To read more and see the complete list, click HERE

Announcing Our New Documentary Project - Being Different: 101 Global LGBTQ Individuals Who Changed the World

Beingdifferentdoc.png

Despite adversity and discrimination, LGBTQ individuals have excelled throughout history. Yet historians and academics have conveniently participated in the heterosexist erasure of these LGBTQ contributions by omitting the LGBTQ status of prominent historical figures from academic and historical documents. Accordingly, there are relatively few comprehensive projects which document and showcase the influence of these LGBTQ efforts.

Being Different: 101 Global LGBTQ Individuals Who Changed The World will be an original documentary outlining the contributions that members of the LGBTQ community have made, individually and collectively, to changing the world.

We are now Crowdfunding to get this project off the ground. We would love to have you as part of our team. You can help us and SUPPORT THIS PROJECT!

Our goal is to make QueerBio.com the go-to website for global biographical information on LGBTQ identified individuals. To do this requires a serious commitment of people and resources, so we need your help to fund and help this project grow.
