Investigative journalism is a unique branch of journalism in which the journalist reports on a controversial subject by way of an in-depth, research intensive study of the matter. The issue can be local, national, or international in scope. It most often involves crime, corruption, or the accountability of powerThe journalist is responsible for extensive fact-checking and analysis of public records along with their own sleuthing through the use of state-of-the art tools and techniques.

By the very nature of the work, investigative journalism requires tremendous resources and time commitmentsThis is in stark contrast to the growing addiction by the general public, driven by social media, for instantaneous news and entertainment. The two often conflict, with rapid-fire social media stories being proven groundless or exaggerated once an in-depth analysis of the issue is undertaken.

There are organizations which support the work of LGBTQ investigative journalists and editors. These include the National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association (NLGJA), and Investigative Reporters and Editors (IRE). This logistical support is very important because investigating controversial subject matter while being openly LGBTQ often puts the individual into situations of even greater risk.

Despite adversity and discrimination, LGBTQ individuals have excelled throughout history. Yet historians and academics have conveniently participated in the heterosexist erasure of these LGBTQ contributions by omitting the LGBTQ status of prominent historical figures from academic and historical documents. Accordingly, there are relatively few comprehensive projects which document and showcase the influence of these LGBTQ efforts.

Teachers of Creative Writing Who Identify as LGBTQ

Lgbtqcreativewriting.jpg

Creative writing is the art of imaginative story telling. It requires the ability to convey the writer's unique voice, develop original ideas, present interesting characters in an interesting setting, and develop an engaging storyline. The output can be short story, narrative essay, novel, poetry, movie and television scripts, or memoir. Creative writing is all about using one's imagination and creativity to express ideas and thoughts in a way which is personal to the individual writer.

Creative writing programs at Colleges, Universities and other higher education institutions are very popular. Many such institutions have gained a high reputation for their programs in creative writing. LGBTQ-friendly creative writing programs may include LGBTQ literature, gender & sexuality studies, and faculty. The course curriculum and anthology will be queer inclusive.

This relationship to the community will welcome and inspire a cohort of students to learn the secrets to conveying their own creative stories. The student output has the potential to further enrich the LGBTQ anthology.

We have identified prominent LGBTQ Creative Writing teachers from Australia, Canada, Great Britain, Greece, Ireland, Israel, Jamaica, Mexico, New Zealand, Scotland, Tanzania, and the United States. To read more and see the complete list, click HERE
